West Virginia electrician license: hours, reciprocity and pay
West Virginia electrician license rules as of 2026: 2,000 hours for journeyman, open-book exam, June 30 expiration, VA and KY reciprocity and BLS pay data.
A West Virginia journeyman electrician license takes 1 year (2,000 hours) of hands-on work, a U.S. Department of Labor apprenticeship, or a 1,080-hour state vocational course, then an open-book exam. There's no CE, but every license expires June 30. The median West Virginia electrician made $31.16 an hour in May 2025, per BLS.
Everything below is as of 2026. Electricians are licensed by the West Virginia Office of the State Fire Marshal, Regulatory and Licensing Division, under West Virginia Code chapter 29, article 3B. The Fire Marshal's site doesn't spell out the hours and exam rules, so several facts below come from Mike Holt Enterprises' state page and are marked. Confirm those with the Fire Marshal's office before you act on them. For the national picture, see electrician license requirements by state.
01West Virginia license facts at a glance
| Item | West Virginia, as of 2026 |
|---|---|
| Who licenses | State Fire Marshal, Regulatory and Licensing Division |
| Journeyman | 2,000 hrs, a DOL apprenticeship, or a 1,080-hr vo-tech course (secondary) |
| Master | 4,000 hrs (2 years) of hands-on work (secondary) |
| Exam | Open book, 2020 NEC, 4 hours (secondary) |
| Reciprocity | Virginia and Kentucky (secondary) for journeyman and master |
| Renewal | Every year, June 30; no CE (secondary) |
02How do you qualify for a West Virginia journeyman license?
Per Mike Holt's page, you need one of three things:
- 1 year (2,000 hours) of hands-on electrical work, all above-ground structural wiring under the NEC.
- A completed U.S. Department of Labor apprenticeship.
- A West Virginia Department of Education 1,080-hour vocational course.
That's a low bar. Virginia's usual path is 4 years in the field plus 240 classroom hours, and many licensing states want 8,000 hours. Confirm the current paths with the Fire Marshal before you apply.
The statute lets the Fire Marshal issue master, journeyman and temporary electrician licenses, plus specialty classes. Mike Holt lists single family dwelling, low voltage, sign and HVAC electrical among them. Electrical contracting companies are licensed separately by the West Virginia Contractor Licensing Board.
03How do you make master?
Per Mike Holt, a master needs at least 4,000 hours (2 years) of hands-on work covering residential, commercial and industrial, and vocational training doesn't count toward it. A master can do all types of electrical work, including design layout, and can supervise up to three apprentices on a job site. Confirm with the board.
04What's the exam like?
Open book. Per Mike Holt, the journeyman, master and single family dwelling exams are based only on the 2020 NEC: 50 multiple-choice questions and 5 calculations in 4 hours, with results in about 15 business days. You can bring the 2020 NEC with tabs, a key word index, Ugly's and a calculator. Your application has to reach the office at least 7 business days before the test date.
Open book doesn't mean easy. Four hours goes fast if you're flipping for every answer, so tab the articles you'll hit most. The Fire Marshal posts its 2026 and 2027 exam dates and locations on its licensing page. Our journeyman electrician exam guide has more on how to prepare.
05Does West Virginia have reciprocity?
The law is broad and the practice is narrow. West Virginia Code 29-3B-4 says the Fire Marshal "shall grant the same or equivalent classification of license without written examination" to someone licensed elsewhere who gives satisfactory proof they can work safely and competently, is in good standing everywhere they're licensed, and pays the fee.
In practice, the agreements named are:
- Virginia: journeyman and master exam reciprocity, confirmed on Virginia DPOR's official agreement list.
- Kentucky: journeyman and master, per Mike Holt.
- Ohio, North Carolina, Maryland: master level, per Mike Holt.
Mike Holt adds two catches. You have to have passed an exam under the current licensing entity, and anyone who held a West Virginia license and let it expire is not eligible for reciprocity. Confirm both with the board. Our Virginia electrician license guide, Kentucky electrician license guide and Ohio electrician license guide cover the other side of those lines.
06Will a West Virginia card get you into other states?
Sometimes, but the low hour count follows you. South Dakota's Electrical Commission lists West Virginia as a state with similar licensing but no agreement, noting the card is "2,000 hours short." Washington wants 8,000 hours for its general journey level card unless you come in on an Oregon license.
If you plan to travel, keep proof of every hour you work, not just the card: pay stubs, W-2s and a letter from each shop listing your hours and the work. A board that won't take a 2,000-hour license at face value may still count documented hours toward its own standard. Our electrician license reciprocity guide explains how boards weigh an out-of-state card.
07Renewal and the 12-month rule
Per Mike Holt, journeyman and master licenses expire June 30 every year, and there's no continuing education requirement. If your license lapses more than 12 months, you can't renew it. You retest, "No exceptions." The Fire Marshal's online portal takes applications and renewals.
One more state-specific rule: under 29-3B-4, a prior conviction can't keep you from a first license once five years have passed since the conviction or your release, whichever is later, with no other convictions, as long as the offense wasn't violent or sexual. Our guide to getting an electrical license with a felony covers how other states handle it.
08What does a West Virginia electrician make?
The median West Virginia electrician made $31.16 an hour in May 2025, a little over the national median of $30.38. The top 10% made $45.74 or more. These are BLS OEWS straight-time wages for all electricians, apprentices included. They leave out overtime, per diem and benefits, and they're market data, not what any one contractor will pay you.
| Area (BLS OEWS, May 2025) | Median hourly | 10th to 90th pct |
|---|---|---|
| West Virginia | $31.16 | $20.97 to $45.74 |
| Weirton-Steubenville, WV-OH | $33.08 | $21.49 to $48.86 |
| Wheeling, WV-OH | $32.20 | $21.26 to $45.88 |
| Charleston | $31.17 | $21.33 to $44.88 |
| Huntington-Ashland, WV-KY-OH | $30.59 | $18.22 to $46.44 |
| Beckley | $30.32 | $20.90 to $43.70 |
| Morgantown | $29.62 | $18.74 to $37.89 |
West Virginia had 4,290 electricians on payroll and a $64,810 median annual wage. Its median beat Virginia ($30.24), Kentucky ($28.71) and Ohio ($31.11), and trailed Pennsylvania ($32.50) and Maryland ($35.33).
In the eastern panhandle, Jefferson County falls inside the Washington-Arlington-Alexandria, DC-VA-MD-WV metro, where the median was $36.50, while the Hagerstown-Martinsburg, MD-WV metro was $29.96. Those are multi-state numbers, not West Virginia ones, but they're why hands around Charles Town look east. If you're weighing that drive, our journeyman electrician pay guide covers what moves a rate.

How long does it take to become a journeyman electrician in West Virginia?
As little as 1 year (2,000 hours) of hands-on work, per Mike Holt's summary of the state rules, or a DOL apprenticeship or a 1,080-hour vocational course. Then you pass the open-book exam. Confirm the current paths with the Fire Marshal.
Can I use my Virginia license in West Virginia?
Virginia and West Virginia have journeyman and master exam reciprocity, so you can skip the exam. You still apply to the West Virginia Fire Marshal with a verification of your Virginia license.
Do West Virginia electricians need continuing education?
No CE is required for journeymen or masters, per Mike Holt. You do have to renew every year by June 30.
What happens if my West Virginia license expires?
Renew as soon as you can. If it's been lapsed more than 12 months, you can't renew and you have to retest. A former West Virginia licensee who let the card expire also can't come back through reciprocity.
